It was just a high school psychology class, probably an elective. Our teacher was a boiler room devotee, so we sophomores were at the mercy of his student teacher. Or perhaps it was the other way around. At any rate, something profound happened one day. A girl who sat in front of me raised her hand and asked the question at least twenty-nine of her fellow classmates wanted to know.
“Why do people do crazy things?”
The trainee looked at her dumbly for a brief moment, then climbed on the teacher’s desk, his head inches from the peeling ceiling, shrugged his shoulders and said, “I dunno.”

Profound because it’s true. We dunno. But you can bet there’s something, aside from our biological makeup, that makes us act and react the way we do. And that’s why stories are so fascinating.
